Seattle – The city’s oldest neighbourhood, Pioneer Square, is a cultural gem; visitors can discover art galleries, historic tours, and live music as well as unique cafes, bars, and restaurants. Another iconic attraction is Pier 57, which features an amusement park (including the Seattle Great Wheel), shops and bars. It’s also close to the Seattle Aquarium and Waterfront Park. Olympia – As the capital of Washington, Olympia is rich with history and culture. Visitors can tour the Washington State Capitol Building – which features a five-ton Tiffany chandelier – as well as the surrounding campus and Capitol Lake to discover more about the city’s history. The Capitol Building is also close to the Downtown Historic District – expect to see lots of antique shops, public murals, and charming cafes during your visit!
Connecting the Historic District to the famed Olympia Farmer’s Market, Percival Landing is a boardwalk lined with cafes and bars – popular with locals. Another popular option for visitors includes the Olympia Farmers Market – home to over 100 vendors, the market sells a variety of foods and crafts. It’s so popular that over 400,000 people visit each year!
Tacoma – Known for its vibrant culture and art, the city houses many must-see galleries and museums – it even has its own museum district! The city is known for its Museum of Glass – which offers the chance to get involved in its glassmaking workshops – and the Chihuly Bridge of Glass. Three art instalments line the bridge which connects the Museum of Glass to the Washington State History Museum. Explore an in-depth history of the state by taking a tour around the State Museum. The Tacoma Art Museum and LeMay – America’s Car Museum are also worth a visit during your trip.
It will be helpful to know your way around the state, before you move into your Washington serviced apartment; the Washington State Department of Transportation oversees the variety of transport methods available in the state which include:
Air – One of the busiest airports in America, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport is the largest airport in the Pacific Northwest Region. Other major airports in the state include Spokane International Airport, Bellingham International Airport and Tri-Cities Airport.
Rail – Amtrak’s Cascade route (from Eugene to Vancouver) is the busiest route in Washington and can be used to access further routes to Chicago and Los Angeles. Sound Transit Link provides a rail system which covers the Seattle metropolitan area; the Sounder commuter rail also provides transport to the Seattle metropolitan area and surrounding cities, including Everett, Lakewood and Tacoma.
Road – State Routes, the Washington highway system, covers 7,000 miles and accounts for more than half of traffic in the state. The longest highway in the state – the North Cascades Highway or State Route 20 – provides transportation over the Cascade Mountain Range.
Ferry – The Washington State Ferries system is the largest in the US and third largest in the world. As Washington consists of islands and is often separated by lakes or rivers, many rely on ferries for their daily commute around the state. Check out the WSDOT’s sailing schedule for a map of popular routes.
Knowing some key cultural norms before your stay in Washington corporate housing will help you feel at home. Learn more about the city’s:
Sports – The Seattle Seahawks is an American football team with a large fan base in the state; Seahawk fans are renowned for their lively ‘tailgate parties’ – with delicious barbeques – held in the car park of stadiums before, during or after a game. Another popular sports event is the Apple Cup; held every year, it is an interstate American football match between the University of Washington State Huskies and the Washington State University Cougars.
Music Festivals – Washington is renowned for its live music festivals (such as Bumbershoot, Watershed, and the Capitol Hill Block Party) and thousands of people travel into the state for the events each year. Washington serviced apartments provide corporate travellers with the comfort, space and independence needed to feel truly at home during their business trip.
