At the turn of the 20th century, Buffalo received the nickname City of Light, on account of its use of electric lighting – which had a knock-on effect on its mills and helped to pave the way for an automobile revolution. By the 1950s Buffalo was major manufacturing centre and one of America’s most densely populated cities, home to such companies as Lackawanna Steel and Republic Steel.
