Wolverhampton is the 12th largest city in the UK and is situated in the West Midlands. The city was founded in 985 and initially started life as a market town that specialised in the wool trade. It remained this way until the industrial revolution, when the city massively expanded due to the mining industry. This industry progressively died out and modern day Wolverhampton now specialises in engineering and service sectors.
Wolverhampton’s most prominent feature is the St. Peter’s Collegiate Church, which sits at the highest point of the city. The 15th century church is a grade 1 listed building and provides significant architectural interest. Alternatively, The Prince Albert statue can be found in Queens Square, directly at the heart of the shopping district. The Wulfrun, Wolverhampton’s largest shopping centre, is located here. The centre houses over 30 high street stores and several restaurants.
The M4 and M5 are the nearest major motorways to Wolverhampton, both of which are accessed by the M54. Wolverhampton also has its own major train station which has lines running through it from cities as far as London and Glasgow. There is also a metro system that operates in Wolverhampton which is a smaller, more regular train system. The line runs from Wolverhampton St. George's to Birmingham Snow Hill station.
