Situated in North East England, Stockton-On-Tees is a market town approximately 250 miles north of London. The town began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement and first became a market town in 1310 when it was declared that a market should run ever Wednesday. Business gradually dropped throughout the 20th century, until in the 1980s, when Stockton saw a dramatic increase in service industries. This industry continued to increase and is now the main source of business in the town.
Each year, the town is host to one of Europe’s largest festivals called the Stockton International Riverside Festival. The festival attracts over 250,000 guests and performances include circus, comedy and music acts. Stockton town centre is home to two shopping centres, the Castlegate and Wellington Square. Stockton-On-Tees is also famous for its infinity bridge.
The town operated the first steam-hauled passenger train and has the oldest railway station in the world. Today, Stockton-On-Tees is served by Stockton railway station and Thornaby station providing services to cities including Newcastle and Leeds. The nearest airport is Durham Tees Valley Airport which flies to European locations including Amsterdam.
