Rugby is town in Warwickshire, England. It’s located close to the River Avon, and is roughly 13 miles from Coventry. It is also near to Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. Other towns nearby include Daventry, Hinckley and Lemington Spa. It has a population of more than 70,000, and is the second biggest town in the county.
Rugby started life as an Iron Age farming settlement. Originally Tripontium, it’s recognised as the birthplace of rugby football. It was given the rights to hold a market in 1255, and, from there, developed into a market town. Rugby was relatively overlooked until the 19th century. In 1838, the London and Birmingham Railway was built, and brought with it new links to the town. Similar connections were achieved with the construction of the Midland Counties Railway in 1840.
Rugby was subsequently transformed into a railway junction. Its various workshops and rail yards attracted new workers, and, as a result, the town’s population grew. During the late 19th century, Rugby became a key industrial centre. Various engineering firms moved in, most notably Willans & Robinson, and British Thomson-Houston. In the years that followed, Rugby was turned into a municipal borough and its boundaries were expanded to cover the villages Hillmorton, Bronsover and Newbold-on-Avon.
Right now, Rugby is an attractive market town brimming with attractions. Popular landmarks include the Rugby School & Museum, the Rugby Theatre and Rugby Art Gallery and Museum. The town has its fair share of green spaces such Great Central Walk and Caldecott Park. It also has a great hiking trail in the form of Draycote Water.
Rugby is located close to several major trunk routes including the M1, M6 and M45 motorways. The town also adjoins the A45, A426 and A428 roads. There are various buses which run through Rugby and connect to Southam, Coventry, Leamington Spa, Leicester and Northampton. Rugby railway station, the town’s main train station, offers regular services to Birmingham, London and Stafford and Crewe. The closest airport to Rugby is Birmingham Airport, at 30 miles away.
