Chesterfield is a borough and market town in Derbyshire, England. It’s located 24 miles from Derby and 11 miles from Sheffield and lies at the confluence of two rivers: the river Rother and the river Hipper. The town has a population of more than 103,000 and is the second largest town in the county after Derby. It’s twinned with the following places: Darmstadt (Germany), Troyes (France), Yangquan (China), Tsumeb (Namibia).
The history of Chesterfield dates back to the 13th century. In 1204, the town received a market charter from King John and was turned into a free borough. Shortly thereafter it served as a site for the Battle of Chesterfield, in which a group of rebel barons were beaten by a royalist army.
In 1594, Elizabeth granted the borough a charter of incorporation. The charter resulted in the creation of a corporation consisting of alderman, brethren and burgesses. The borough was originally made up of just the township of Chesterfield, but, as time went on, expanded its borders to include Newbold and New Whittington.
Chesterfield has since grown with the introduction of the Chesterfield line - part of the Leeds to Derby railway line - and, nowadays, boasts an impressive selection of parks, monuments and historic sites. Top attractions include Chesterfield Canal, Hardwick Hall, and the Chesterfield Museum and Art Gallery. Other sites worth seeing are Queen’s Park, Revolution House and Pomegranate Theatre. For shopping, head to either The Pavements shopping centre or Vicar Lane Shopping Centre.
Chesterfield connects to the A61 road, which lies roughly 6 miles from the M1 motorway. It adjoins the M1 via junction 30 of the A619 road. The town is served by a number of buses, provided primarily by the operator, Stagecoach. Chesterfield railway station forms part of the Midland line, and offers services to Sheffield, Derby, Leeds, Leicester, Manchester, Nottingham and Norwich. The closest airport to Chesterfield is East Midlands Airport, at roughly 35 miles away.
