Castle Donington is an old market town in the county of Leicestershire, England. It’s located 14.5 miles south of Nottingham and just over 10 miles outside of Derby, and has an estimated population of more than 6,400. Castle Donington was originally formed in the 12th century, with the creation of the Castle of Donington. The town developed shortly thereafter and saw the emergence of a market, fair and hospital. Later in history, the castle was abandoned and the stone was used to build Donington Hall, which you can still see today, in the centre of Donington Park.
Lace-making was a large industry in the town up until its decline in the 1850s. A sharp fall in population was also recorded at this point. The opening of the nearby East Midlands Airport created many new employment opportunities, and, in the early 21st century Castle Donington was thriving.
Castle Donington is well known for the iconic race track, Donington Park. The circuit is owned by MotorSport Vision and hosts events most weekends. It’s now one of the UK’s premier race tracks. Castle Donington is also known for its stately homes including Calke Abbey, and Elvaston Castle, which are both open to the public for exploring. Just outside Castle Donington, you will find East Midlands Aeropark: an aviation museum boasting historic planes.
The M1 runs laterally to Castle Donington, and connects to various other parts of the UK. East Midlands Airport is a seven minute drive from the centre of town and doubles as a popular train station.
