Bromley is a town in Southeast London, located roughly 10 miles from Charing Cross. Officially a post town, it consists of postcodes BR1 and BR2 and covers the areas Bickley, Sundridge Park, Hayes, Shortlands, Bickley and Bromley Common. Other places close to Bromley include Beckenham, Chislehurst, Penge and Orpington. The town forms part of two parliamentary constituencies and is overseen by MP, Bob Neill.
Bromley originally went by the name Bromleag, meaning “woodland clearing where broom grows”. The town draws close links with Rochester, and is thought to date back as far as AD 862. From 1858, the town experienced rapid growth, with the opening a new railway in Shortlands, followed by expansion in nearby Bickley.
Historically a market town, Bromley has a distinct village feel with nice parks, cafes, theatres, schools and houses. It’s one of several metropolitan areas in London and boasts a large retail centre with a pedestrianized high street. Its shopping centre, The Glades, has a total of 135 stores and is popular with locals. The town has also has its fair share of pubs, and plays host to a total of four non-League football clubs. Bromley is covered by two train stations - Bromley South and Bromley North. Bromley South offers direct trains into London Victoria, and Bromley North connects to Grove Park. The town is served by a number of buses which run all over London. A number 61 bus takes you all the way from Chislehurst to Bromley Common, and the 162 bus connects to Beckenham Junction tram station. The closest airport to Bromley is City Airport, at roughly 10 miles away. Heathrow is the second closest airport at 16 miles away.
