Borehamwood is a town in Hertfordshire, England. It’s located close to St. Albans and forms part of the London Commuter Belt. It has an oceanic climate and a population of more than 31,000. The town is roughly 12 miles from Charing Cross, and is twinned with the following towns: Fontenay-au-Roses (France), Offenburg (Germany) and Huainan (China).
Borehamwhood originally went by the name Bosci di Borham, meaning the Wood of Boreham. Its origins can be traced back to the 12th century, and, up until the 20th century, the town was part of the ancient parish of Elstree. In the immediate years following the Second World War, Borehamwood’s population increased rapidly. A number of new houses were built in the area, and connections to the town improved too.
Since the 1920s, Borehamwood has been home to various film studios, and, played host to a number of well-known films including Moby Dick, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Dr Zhivago. Famous Borehhamood residents, past and present, include television producer, Simon Cowell and footballer Dele Alli.
The town is brimming with schools, which make it an attractive place to live and relocate to. Popular attractions close by include Bhaktivedanta Manor, Bentley Priory Museum and Go Ape Cockfosters – which is popular with families. Other sites worth seeing are Estree & Borenhamwood Museum, The Ark Theatre and Meadow Park. There are number of villages close to Borehamwood including Arkley, Barnet Gate, Mill Hill, Elstree and Radlett.
The town is served by buses and trains. On the west side of Borehamhood is the railway station, Elstree and Borehamwood, which falls in zone 6 of the London Underground, and is covered by overground trains. The 107 bus runs through the town, as does the 292 bus. You can reach Borehamhood via the A1 road and the M25, which passes to within 2 miles of the town. The closest airport to Borehamwood is London City Airport, at roughly 25 miles away.
