Often referred to as the capital city, Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka and is situated on the west coast. The Sri Lankan parliament is located in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, a suburb of Colombo, this area is also thought of as being the capital of Sri Lanka as it is the administrative centre; however Colombo is the commercial and financial centre. As the largest city in the country and the most developed, Colombo attracts tourists from around the world to visit the picturesque landscape, including Beira Lake, an icon of the city where traditional events are held.
The city first developed itself in the port industry from the 16th industry; Colombo Harbour today is one of the busiest ports in the world, with much of the Sri Lankan economy being supported through this. The majority of corporations in Sri Lanka also house their offices in Colombo. The World Trade Centre is the tallest building in Sri Lanka, and is located in Fort, the central business district. This area is consequently one of the most visited landmarks and is also a hub of business, as it is the home of the Colombo Stock Exchange. Also located in Fort is The Galle Face Green, a promenade which attracts high numbers of people as it is the largest stretch of greenery in Colombo. The promenade is located alongside the Indian Ocean and provides spectacular scenic views.
Due to over-development, limited rail services operate within the city. Fort Railway Station is the main station and is served by the main line and coastal line as well as some commuter trains. Badaranaike International Airport and Ratmalana Airport serve the city with the latter predominantly used for domestic flights. Badaranaike International Airport is the larger of the two and flies to much of Europe as well as the UAE.
