The State of Qatar is an independent emirate country, located in Western Asia, bordering Saudi Arabia and the Persian Gulf. At one point it was known for being a pearl-fishing centre, making it one of the poorest Gulf States, however, is it now ranked as the richest country in the world (2014).
Qatar’s has a high-income economy since oil was discovered in 1940. This boosted their GDP, which is now worth an estimated $173 billion. The country is mainly based around the petroleum and natural gas industry with petroleum accounting for 85% of its export earnings. They are also the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas. Qatar has a high standard of living as citizens do not pay taxes. They also have achieved the highest human development ranking within the Arab nations. The country has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world at 0.1% (2013).
Qatar is home to many popular tourist destinations including; museums, The Pearl (a man-made island), Souq Waqif (Qatar’s old marketplace) and Khor Al Udied - dunes mainly used for racing by tourists and locals. Qatar built a new airport, named Hamad International airport, in order to increase the number of business travellers visiting the country and to generally help this sector to grow.
