Piacenza is a city and commune in Italy’s Emilia-Romagna Region. It lies to the north of the country has a population of over 104,000.

The name Piacenza derives from the Latin word “Plancentia”, which many assume is a play on the Latin verb “placere”, meaning “to please”.

Originally a military colony, together with Cremona, Piacenza was occupied by the Romans before later becoming one of the riches countries in Europe.

Nowadays the city is a picturesque hub of churches, cathedral and monuments. Points of interest include the Basilica di Sant'antonino, Piacenza Cathedral and Piazza Cavalli. It has its great galleries like Ricci Oddi and a wonderful green space in the form of Galleana park. If you get the chance, take in a theatre show at Sala dei Teatini, or go for a meal at the restaurant, Peppino.

Piacenza lies at a busy cross junction and is linked by Milan’s metropolitan system. It has intercity connections with over 20 cities in Italy including Rome and Naples, as well as bus links with places like Bosnia and Herzegovina. The closest airport to Piacenza is Parma Airport, at roughly 45 miles away.
