Marseille is a large industrial city on the French Mediterranean coast with a population of around 1,721,000. The main airport serving the city is Marseille Provence Airport, which provides connections to international destinations including London and Amsterdam as well as other locations in France. The city itself is served by the Marseille Metro train system and an extensive bus network. There is also a TGV line, which takes just under 3 hours to get to the capital of the country, Paris.
With an extensive sea port, Marseille is an important centre in France for trading and also has a growing service sector. Popular sites within the city include Vieux-Port, which provides locals and visitors with an array of cafés along the main harbour, the Marseille History Museum, which is a museum devoted to the city’s history and Notre Dame de la Garde, which is an extensive church overlooking the city.
