Larnaca is one of the largest cities in Cyprus after Nicosia and Limassol and lies on the southern coast of the island. It is the second largest commercial port on the island and also a notable tourist destination as well as the home of Cyprus’s largest airport, Larnaca International Airport.
The city was founded by Greeks in the 14th century BC and was originally called Kition. Having a significant port status in the city’s history Larnaca also formed the colloquial title of ‘Skala’ which means the ‘landing stage’ or 'ladder’. One of Larnaca's interesting landmarks is the Marble Bust of Zeno which stands at the crossroads near the American Academy. Zeno was born in 334 BC in Kition (ancient Larnaca) and founded the famous Stoic school of philosophy in Athens.
Due to the closure of Nicosia International Airport, Larnaca’s air and sea port has grown in importance and now plays an increasingly important role in the economy of the island. The tourism industry in Larnaca is particularly valuable and employs three quarters of its labour force: many tour and travel agencies have their head offices at Larnaca, including the head office of Eurocypria Airlines.
