The history of Zagreb dates back to Roman times. The first recorded reference to the city came in 1134 with a mention to the settlement, Kaptol – located in uptown Zagreb. During the 19th century, Zagreb was a hub for the Croatian National Revival, which saw the creation of important historic and cultural institutions. In 1862, it received its very first railway line, which connected to the city to the settlements Sisak and Zidai Most, thereby increasing business travel to the area. A year later, a major gas works opened in the Zagreb.
Since the 20th century, Zagreb has undergone considerable expansion. There’s a tourist train which runs through Zagreb, covering a small route between Ban Jelacic Square and the city centre.
