Ghent is a charming city in Belgium that lies between the Rivers Scheldt and Leie. It’s both a university city and a port, home to quirky bars, fascinating museums and inspiring architecture. The city is part of a wider municipality, made up various local towns, and has a population of more than 250,000.

Ghent’s history can be traced back as far as the middle ages. From 650, the city grew into a commercial centre with two Abbeys, before later becoming a small city-state. By the 13th century, Ghent was the second largest city in Europe, north of the Alps.

Nowadays the city is known for its historic sites and houses, which have well and truly stood the test of time. Famous attractions include St. Michael’s Bridge, St Bavo’s Cathedral and the Ghent City Museum. Also worth visiting are Gravensteen, and Citadel Park.

Ghent has a comprehensive transport system. Its roads are well connected and consist of two main motorways. The city has a total of five railway stations, along with a number of tram lines and bus stops.

The closest airport to Ghent is Brussels National Airport, at 42 miles from the city.
