Hobart is the capital city of Tasmania which is located a short distance south from Australia and is an island state of the country. The city is a hub for business and shipping as it serves as a port for much of the Australian and French Antarctic operations. The port is also very useful for tourism and many cruise shops dock during the summer months.
Hobart is internationally famous for yachting and is the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which starts in Sydney on Boxing Day. The yacht race is made into a part of the Hobart Summer Festival, a food and wine festival beginning just after Christmas and ending in mid-January.
The central business district is located on the western shore and the inner suburbs are spread out along the shores of the Derwent and climbing up the hills at the foot of Mount Wellington. Cadbury chocolate is one of the notable companies to have a factory here and the city is home to a number of light manufacturers.
Bus is the main mode of public transport in the city, run by the government. The nearest airport is located in the suburb of Cambridge approximately a 20 minute drive from the city centre. Destinations include major Australian cities such as Melbourne and Sydney.
