Celebrate the start of spring with this great British sporting event held in London on Sunday 29 March. Find a spot on the bank of the Thames and pray for sunny weather as you cheer on crews from all over the world competing in this long standing competition. Founded in 1925, as a way for crews to practice long rows in preparation for the summer regattas, the race takes places on a 4.5 mile stretch of the Thames from Mortlake to Putney (same course, opposite direction to the Boat Race).

Rowers passing Putney Bridge

The race starts at Chiswick Bridge and finishes at Putney Bridge – so which serviced apartments could you book along the route?

Blake Apartments in Kew are close to the start of the race, so wake up and take a stroll from Kew into Mortlake to see the crews taking to the water from midday. The crews of eight start the race one after the other with ten seconds between each boat as a safety precaution. It takes approximately two hours for everyone to complete the course and the crew with the fastest recorded time is the winner.

Continue along the Thames past Barnes Bridge, another good vantage point, and into Hammersmith where we have a number of serviced apartments in our portfolio if you’re looking to be closer to central London. Fulham Palace Apartments are housed in a period property on the Fulham Palace Road, close to the busy Hammersmith Bridge.

The race ends in glorious Putney, where pubs line the banks of the Thames – get in early if you want a seat in one of these as in true Brit style, they fill up fast! Ongar Road Apartments are in Fulham just a ten minute walk to the grade II listed Putney Bridge which oversees the finishing line.

Even if you’re not a huge sports lover or rowing enthusiast, there’s nothing more British that enjoying a drink on the banks of the Thames trying to convince yourself it’s warm enough to be sat outside. So, wrap up and get down to the river for the perfect day out whilst visiting London this March. Find and book your perfect serviced apartment in London with SilverDoor.
