From June to August, the city has warm summers with average temperatures of around 23°, however these are also the rainiest months so you may still need your umbrella. When entering Stockholm, SIM cards are available to purchase from both Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Göteborg Landvatter Airport. Cheap plans are also available at local Telia and Telenor stores, as well as local convenience stores. You will need proof of identification to buy a SIM, so don’t forget your passport and make sure your phone is SIM unlocked before you arrive in Sweden!

Transport in Stockholm

Stockholm’s transport system is called the SL and is comprised of buses, trams, underground trains, commuter trains and certain ferry lines. The system is very easy to use, well organised and reasonably priced.  A single adult fare costs 39 SEK (£2.90) and gives the user access to any form of transport for 75 minutes.

Stockholm metro operates between 5:00am and 1:00am during the weekdays and all night on the weekends, providing 100 stations that can take visitors to various points of interest downtown as well as many areas in the city’s outskirts. The metro offers 24- and 72-hour ticket alternatives that let you use the service as much as you like during these times. All lines have trains arriving every 10 minutes during the day, reduced to every 15 minutes for early mornings and late evenings.

Buses are another alternative to explore Stockholm, they are punctual and have night routes for after the subway is closed. There are four main bus routes: Inner-city blue buses, Inner-city red buses (operating less frequently), Suburban blue buses, and Service buses for elderly people.

The ferry is the scenic way to travel in Stockholm and the boats run all year round. Tickets can be purchased at the quay and admission onto ferries between Slussen (right next to Gamla Stan) and Djurgården are included if you purchase a travel card.

Another popular way to travel around Stockholm, especially on a warm day, is by bike. Stockholm promotes the use of bikes with its extensive range of cycle lanes throughout the city and rural areas, offering stunning bike ride settings around Lake Mälaren and through the streets of Södermalm. Rental companies are scattered throughout Stockholm, with most bikes costing around 250 SEK or £28. It’s a great way to see the sights whilst also getting some fresh air!
