Savills’ recent article on the “Top 20 commuter spots outside London” has revealed some useful findings, and the huge difference in house price between locations is just a part of it. Regular commuter train lines are making London more accessible to towns and cities that are further afield.
1. Woking
There are five trains per hour from Woking station, which is one of the busiest stations on the London commuter belt, to London Waterloo and three trains per hour to Clapham Junction. This route serves southern towns and cities such as Portsmouth. Woking is just 30 minutes away from central London train stations.
2. St Albans
Located in Hertfordshire and known for its traditional feel and medieval cathedral, St Albans features a farmers market and a variety of boutique shops and restaurants. There are two train stations - St Albans City railway station can take as little as 18 minutes to arrive at St Pancras International and St Albans Abbey station to Watford Junction takes 15 minutes.
3. Brighton
Brighton is an exciting and busy seaside town with plenty to attract Londoners for a weekend break with the pebbled beaches and 500 metre pier. The town has become a commuter hotspot in the past ten years and more people are opting to travel into London for work. Brighton train station operates lines to London Gatwick Airport, London Bridge and London Victoria station; arriving in central London in under an hour.
4. Reading
Berkshire’s silicon valley of Reading is an important university and commercial town providing its residents with all they need on their door step. With just a 29 minute train journey from Paddington station it’s no wonder why Reading has become such a popular location for commuters.
5. Cambridge
Home to research parks and many medical and agriculture companies and of course the famous university, accommodation in Cambridge has been in high demand for a long time. The villages surround the city centre and offer an air of exclusivity. This is just a short drive from Cambridge station where trains take 50 minutes to arrive at London Kings Cross station.
