As we’re a serviced apartment agent based in London, you may think we’re a little biased. However, with over 8.5 million people living and working in London, we can’t all be wrong!
There are so many reasons why London is an exciting and vibrant place to live and work, so we’ve decided to give you our top three reasons.
Opportunities
Graduates flock to London each year in the hope of snapping up one of the many job opportunities on offer here. With a host of industries to choose from, London is the perfect place to start your career or to find that dream job. The capital’s main industries are finance, brokering, insurance, retail, media and law. London is a global centre and over 70 per cent of FTSE 100 companies have headquarters in London. Job opportunities are in abundance, but can be extremely competitive.
As well as being a leading global centre for industry, London is also home to some of the leading universities and educational establishments in the world. In the current top ten universities in the world the UK holds four spots, two of which are in London. The city is also the location of the third corner of the “Golden Triangle”; this refers to the group of leading universities in the south of England. One corner is taken by the University of Oxford, and another corner by the University of Cambridge. The London corner of the triangle refers to Imperial College London, King’s College London, the London School of Economics and University College London. With world leading research taking place across the city, there’s always the opportunity to learn in London.
Connectivity
We might moan about it on a daily basis, but when the biggest problem we have is missing one tube and having to wait two minutes for the next, we know we’ve got a pretty good thing living and working in London. Accommodating 1.3 billion journeys a year across one of the largest cities in the world, the tube is a true marvel of engineering.
The red double-decker buses are an icon in London, but there’s more to them than their dashing good looks. There’s an extensive bus network throughout London and hopping on the bus gives you the opportunity to look out the window and enjoy the sights of London on your daily commute.
Travelling by public transport in London is made easy with the Oyster Card or your own contactless card. Who doesn’t secretly love scanning their Oyster Card like a proper Londoner?
If you’d prefer to travel by taxi then the famous black cabs are the perfect way to get from A to B and you can pick the brains of your black cab driver who are famous for their extensive knowledge of London.
London is not only well connected to the rest of the UK via the National Rail Network – it’s also well connected to the rest of the world. London has five airports all of which are located within an hour’s journey of central London. For those looking to work in the financial district, the City even has its own airport flying to Europe and some specialised flights to New York.
Culture
There’s no shortage of culture in London with 857 art galleries, 170 museums, 250 festivals and over 300 music venues there’s always something going on. Some of the most famous are the National Gallery which overlooks Trafalgar Square and the British Museum on Russell Square. Opened in the 19th century to educate the masses, these museums have free entry for all.
London is a hugely diverse city where over 300 languages are spoken. This cultural diversity is represented in the food that can be found throughout the city in its markets and restaurants.
The diversity continues into the various boroughs and areas of London which each have their own distinct feel. If you’re looking for the more traditional London experience try Kensington, Greenwich or Notting Hill. If you like a trendier, livelier atmosphere head to Shoreditch or Brixton. If you are travelling to London with family there are lots of family friendly areas such as Clapham, Chiswick, Richmond and Barnet to name just a few.
