Canary Wharf, located on the docklands on the eastern edge of the City, is the second largest business district in the UK. Here are some interesting facts you may or may not have known about Canary Wharf:

  • The first building to be built on the new development was the Canary Wharf tower now known as One Canada Square. It was the tallest building in Europe at the time, but now it has to accept second place to the towering Shard.
  • There are 14 million square feet of retail and office space in Canary Wharf.
  • 90,000 people are employed in Canary Wharf.
  • Canary Wharf is often referred to as the Isle of Dogs. The Isle of Dogs was first mentioned in Henry III’s papers and it is thought that Edward III kept greyhounds here.
  • Canary Wharf was declared an Enterprise zone 1983.
  • Canary Wharf takes its name from the No.32 berth of the West Wood Quay of the Import Dock. This was built in 1936 for Fruit Lines Ltd for the Mediterranean and Canary Island fruit trade. At their request, the quay and warehouse were given the name Canary Wharf.
  • 1,000 ships a month still pass through the docks.
