Cycling in London

Cycling in London
27th April 2012

SilverDoor have recently introduced a cycle to work scheme, which allows members of staff to purchase discounted bikes and cycling gear and pay for it in weekly instalments. Although we’ve always had cycling racks and showers at the office, we hope that the scheme will encourage members of staff to hop on their bikes on a workday morning.

London has a reputation as a difficult city to cycle in, and it’s certainly not as cycle-friendly as other European cities. But cycling here can still be enjoyable, and it has plenty of benefits, allowing you to escape the traffic, stay healthy and explore areas of London you couldn’t otherwise.

Riding a bike is not only cheaper and healthier than using public transport - it also provides freedom and independence, because there aren’t any fixed routes or predefined stops and you ride when and where you want to.

You don’t have to own a bike to start cycling in London. Consider using the Barclays Cycle Hire (BCH) scheme, particularly if you’re only in the city for a short time. All you need is a credit or debit card - you will be billed according to how long you use the bike for. The bicycles (often referred to as ‘Boris bikes’) have been designed for riders of all experience levels.

Cycling isn’t just for commuting to work, however. It’s also a great way to explore the city, along its many cycle lanes, parks and bridleways.

These are three of my favourite routes:

From Hammersmith to central London along the Thames

This ride starts in Hammersmith (just off Fulham Palace Road) under Hammersmith Bridge and runs for many miles alongside the Thames. The route is very picturesque and there are plenty of pubs en route if you need to stop and refuel.

Regent's Canal

This canal-side nine mile ride will take you from east London to west London via some of London’s most undiscovered scenery, travelling through tunnels and basins. Starting at Camden Lock, simply follow the canal as far east as you like, or all the way to the end point - Limehouse Basin.

Hyde Park

The Hyde Park loop is a great route for beginners, and somehow makes you feel like you’re in the countryside - despite being in central London. It’s a great way to unwind after a day at the office and all you need to do is follow the cycle path around the park as many times as you like.

Wherever you cycle, taxi, train, bus or just walk, give SilverDoor a call so we can help find the perfect match from our portfolio of London serviced apartments for your next visit, by all your favourite routes!
