Here are our top picks of things to do in the capital over the festive season.
Ice Skating
Ice skating rinks throughout the capital are beginning to open and Londoner’s are grabbing their skates and getting in the festive spirit.
The 18th century courtyard at Somerset House provides the perfect setting for an ice rink. Even if you don’t fancy taking your chances on the ice, the skate lounge provides a front row view of the rink and offers a selection of seasonal drinks and snacks.
The Natural History Museum is famous around the world and houses over 80 million artefacts including the notorious skeleton of a Diplodocus. Over the Christmas period, the exterior is transformed into an enchanting ice rink with a spectacular Christmas tree located in the middle of the ice rink. A festive café come bar overlooks the ice, the perfect spot for people watching.
Christmas Carol Concerts
The dulcet tones of school boy choirs can be heard at Christmas carol concerts across London throughout December. If you’re looking for a truly memorable experience then the concerts at Westminster Abbey and St. Paul’s cathedral will take your breath away. Westminster Abbey is spectacular and steeped in history providing an atmospheric setting for Christmas carolling. St. Paul’s Cathedral is situated on the highest point in the city and skyscrapers are positioned so as not to obstruct the view of this beautiful cathedral. Tickets are hard to come by so booking in advance is advised.
Christmas Fairs
The streets of London are transformed in December with Christmas fairs popping up all over the capital. Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland and Christmas at Kew are particular favourites of ours with attractions for all the family.
Kew Gardens’ annual Christmas fair is open from 26 November to 3 January and this year they’ve welcomed a brand new attraction. Their mile long night-time trail leads you through a tunnel of lights and a garden of fire. Of course there are plenty of festive treats to indulge in, a number of family rides (including a Victorian carousel) and a Santa’s Grotto for the children.
Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is open from 21 November to 4 January. The event is free to enter and has a whole host of attractions to get you in the Christmas spirit, whether you enjoy browsing the markets, taking to the ice or enjoying a beer in a traditional beer hall there really is something for everyone.
