If you’re thinking about relocating to London with a family, you might want to glance at a recent survey which suggests that outer London is a much more attractive proposition for families with children.
The survey from Experian PropertyCheck rates London boroughs according to a number of factors including crime rates, air quality and local schools.
For families with young children, the south offers the highest quality of life. Bromley was ranked the best borough for families with young children, followed by Sutton, Bexley and Merton. Bromley, in south-east London, has relatively low house prices and good schools.
For families with teenagers the leafy, affluent boroughs of Richmond upon Thames (pictured) and Kingston upon Thames took first and second place respectively. House prices are slightly higher in these areas but both scored highly for their schools and low unemployment levels. Serviced apartment provision is good in both boroughs, which are popular among business travellers thanks to their excellent transport links to central London.
For those without children, Kensington & Chelsea was the best borough, closely followed by Westminster. These areas can be expensive but offer a high standard of living, with low crime rates and a variety of high-quality shops, restaurants and bars. Slightly more affordable areas in the top 10 include Camden, which was third, and Hammersmith & Fulham, which came fourth.
South-east London ranked highly for those whose children are no longer living with them, with Bexley and Bromley again doing well at first and second place. The same qualities that attract families with young children – low house prices, low crime rates and quieter streets –make these areas popular among retirees and couples downsizing to smaller homes.
