Why did I choose SilverDoor?
Studying English Language and Literature at university offers such a broad range of career prospects that I was confused about what job I wanted to do after completing my degree. I felt that a placement year would be the best way to really get an idea of what I would enjoy doing full time.
Throughout the application process with SilverDoor, I just had a really good feeling about the company! The unique company culture shone through, and the size seemed like the perfect fit for me. I felt I would get the benefits of working for a sector leader, as well as the opportunity to be trusted with a range of responsibilities.
What do I do at SilverDoor?
My placement role was split between supply content in the PR team and digital content writing with Marketing. I was responsible for uploading properties from our content management system, SilverDoor Connect, to our website, as well as creating other marketing materials such as blogs, landing pages and social media campaigns. I loved the variation in my role and was even awarded ‘Lancaster Placement Student of the Year’ which is definitely my proudest SilverDoor moment.
As Senior Marketing Executive, I now work on B2B and client-specific materials such as award submissions, RFP bids, email marketing and a range of other branded communication. My job is also a bit of a full circle moment. I now get to proofread and edit our current placement students’ work, just like I used to get my work proofed by those more senior than myself.
What did I enjoy the most about my placement?
I loved the networking and communications side of things. My role allowed me to speak to lots of different people in different departments and seniorities. Although I had to work from home for half of my placement year due to Covid lockdowns, I still felt very involved in the company and the work I was doing. If a global pandemic didn’t even affect the enjoyment of my placement, it had to have been a pretty special job!
Key skills and attributes required to do my job well?
As a Marketing Executive, it’s very important to be proactive and self-motivated. Being driven and able to juggle lots of different projects is also vital to being able to complete multiple tasks to the highest standard.
I developed a strong work ethic during my placement which helped me to excel in my final year of university and prepared me for my current role. I would say that your placement year is what you make it – put yourself out there and get involved in as much as you can!
